Rouffach City View Ceramic Tile | Braun and Hogenberg

Fine 16th-century city view of Rouffach in Alsace from Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the great city-atlas of Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg. The Latin title at upper left reads “Rubeacum, vulgo Ruffach”, and the scene shows the walled town nestled below the hilltop fortress of Château d’Isenbourg. Within the fortifications you can see tightly packed red-roofed houses, churches, and town gates, with three elegantly dressed figures promenading in the foreground.

About Rouffach: Rouffach is a historic wine-growing town in the Upper Rhine, on what is now the famous Alsace Wine Route between Colmar and Mulhouse. In the Middle Ages it was an important small episcopal center, dominated by its Gothic church and the castle above the vineyards. This engraving captures Rouffach at the height of its early modern prosperity, long before modern redevelopment, making it a wonderful document for anyone with connections to Alsace or an interest in early town views.
