This is Troia cum Locis pertinentibus — “Troy with the Surrounding Places,” an early-18th-century copper engraving depicting the imagined landscape of Homer’s Trojan War.

It was engraved by John Harris, whose signature appears at the lower right as “J. Harris fecit,” and published as a folding plate in Volume II of Alexander Pope’s The Iliad of Homer, London, printed by W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintot, 1716. Pope’s complete first edition appeared in six volumes between 1715 and 1720.

The view shows:

  • Troy beneath Mount Ida
  • The rivers Scamander and Simois
  • Sigeum and Rhoeteum
  • The Greek encampment and fleet along the Aegean coast
  • Numbered locations associated with battles and episodes in different books of the Iliad

The Latin text beneath the image identifies such features as the Scaean Gate, the sacred beech tree, the springs of the Scamander, the tomb of Memnon and various battle sites.
